Union County Jail Release Paths
A person processed at the Elizabeth hub can follow more than one path. A court may authorize release to the community after a short stay. Staff may instead transport the person to Essex County Correctional Facility, which is the principal long-term physical custodian for Union County adults. A state sentence can later lead to New Jersey Department of Corrections custody. A warrant, detainer, or another jurisdiction’s hold may also direct the person elsewhere. A detainer is a request that an agency keep or transfer a person for another authority.
The event label matters. A direct release record should state the date, time, and disposition, if those fields are maintained and available. A movement record may name Essex, NJDOC, or another receiving agency. Neither a move to Newark nor a state transfer is release into the community. When the Union record names a destination, continue with that agency until the final custody event is clear.
Confirm Union County Jail Releases
The official Union inmate lookup is a useful starting point, but its disclaimer defines strict limits. Union says data updates daily, may change fast, and may not reflect the true location, status, or release date. Records for people released or paroled are not updated after departure. People in Work Release, Furlough, or Residential Community Programs may remain shown without the release type being clear. Some people can also be excluded. These conditions make the lookup neither a clean current roster nor a release ledger.
Use a short, documented sequence to confirm the event:
- Read the Union inmate-lookup disclaimer, then use the generic lookup only if the connection is valid.
- Compare the exact name, date of birth, booking number, and other known identifiers. Do not merge same-name records.
- If continued adult detention is likely, call Essex County Correctional Facility and ask whether the person remains physically held there.
- Check the correct municipal or Superior Court case for the order or disposition that explains the movement.
- Request the Union custody movement or release record when the public result does not settle whether the event was release or transfer.
The full named-person search and record sequence is also set out on the Union County released-inmates home page. Record the access date and the exact wording of each result.
Union County Jail Release Records
Union County’s Sheriff OPRA page routes public-record requests through the county custodian. OPRA, the Open Public Records Act, provides access to identifiable government records subject to exemptions. It does not require staff to research a broad question or create a new report. Ask for existing records tied to a named person and a reasonable date range. State whether the desired event is a direct release, a transport, or both.
A focused request can seek the booking or intake record, admission date and time, custody-status history, release date and time, disposition code and its definition, and the destination or receiving agency. A court authorization or commitment identifier can help reconcile the event. If codes appear, request the record legend or data dictionary. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, investigative, victim, security, and privacy material may be withheld or redacted under applicable law.

Inspection is available without a copying fee, and electronic submission is allowed. Union recommends a written request. The county’s linked form describes a general seven-business-day framework and an interim response when retrieval needs more time, but its displayed version is old. Confirm current fees and procedures before relying on the amounts printed there.
Why Union Jail Became Intake
Union County’s adult-custody map changed at 11:59 p.m. on June 30, 2021. The county ended long-term adult detention at the former full-service jail, retained the Elizabeth site as an intake and temporary-detention hub, and moved Union adults to Essex County Correctional Facility. The new operation began July 1, 2021 and continued year-round intake functions. That change explains why old instructions that say only “search Union County Jail” can now point to the wrong physical custodian.
The county also reported a major fall in its incarcerated population over the prior decade and projected savings from the shared-services plan. Those figures help explain the policy shift, but they do not prove the route for any one person. Individual confirmation still requires the movement record, the court case, and the receiving agency when transport occurred.
The official Union County transfer announcement shows the source of the present intake-hub and Essex arrangement.
The captured announcement is important because it distinguishes a cross-county transport from a community release.
Union Jail Records Contact
The Division of Corrections is the local source for questions about Union’s intake data and records it created. The public Corrections landing page lists the Elizabeth address, main phone, and fax. If an online entry conflicts with a known event, the lookup disclaimer gives a more specific correction route: send the question in writing to the Classification Unit at the facility mailing address. Classification handles the meaning and correction of Union’s custody data, not Essex’s later physical release record.

Union Jail Court Release Proof
A court record explains the legal basis for release, but it does not always prove the exact moment the person left the building. Municipal cases route to the municipal court in the town of arrest or adjudication. Indictable Superior Court matters route through Union Criminal Case Management. Review the actual order, disposition, judgment, sentence, and jail credits. A charge listing alone cannot show whether release was authorized.
Pair the court record with the correctional event when another hold could exist. Staff may need time to process an order. A detainer, parole warrant, or second case can keep custody in place after one judge orders release. Precise wording helps: “court-ordered release” states authority; “released to the community at the recorded time” describes the custody event. The two facts may come from different offices.
Union Jail State Transfers
If the movement record says NJDOC, use the statewide offender search rather than the Union lookup. Search by SBI number when possible, open the detailed record, and check Current Facility and incarceration history. Current Max Release Date and Current Parole Eligibility Date are forward-looking calculations. They do not show a completed departure. For a past state release, the key NJDOC field is Date Out-of-Custody.
NJDOC warns that records for released or paroled people are not updated continuously after departure. A historic paroled label does not prove current supervision. Formal discharge questions can go to NJDOC through the state OPRA portal. Keep county intake, state imprisonment, and parole records separate because each agency owns a different stage.
- Transfer
- Movement to another custodian, with custody continuing.
- Release
- Departure under legal authority, which may or may not include supervision.
- Discharge
- Completion of the custody or supervision obligation named in the record.
Union Jail ICE Transfer Checks
No current county-contracted ICE detention facility was identified inside Union County. ICE is a separate federal channel, not the operator of the Elizabeth intake hub. If a Union or Essex movement record names immigration custody, search the ICE Online Detainee Locator System with the exact required identifiers. The locator may include current detainees and, under current guidance, people released from ICE custody during the prior 60 days.
A missing ICE result remains ambiguous. Spelling, processing lag, safety exclusions, identifier error, or expiration of the 60-day window can cause no match. “Released by ICE” also does not prove return to Union County or freedom from every other case. Confirm the destination through the record-owning agency and the relevant immigration representative when authorized.
Keep a dated search note when this path applies. Record the exact Union movement wording, the receiving agency, the identifiers entered in ODLS, and the result returned. The ICE Detention Reporting and Information Line can help after a no-result, but information about another person may require a signed privacy waiver or counsel’s Form G-28. That limit is another reason not to treat a locator gap as a confirmed release.
Note: ICE custody is a possible later path only when the actual movement record supports it; it must never be inferred from a Union lookup gap.
